It can be hard deciding on the best decor for your home. And apparently it’s even harder if you have a significant other. The survey of 2,000 Americans, commissioned by the furniture company Article, found couples wind up averaging about 72 spats each year over home improvement particulars. After all, people spend about 216 hours throughout their lives searching for the perfect furniture, according to the researchers.
Furniture shopping seemed to cause the most trouble. A quarter of the respondents said they get frustrated when furniture shopping with their significant other. Fifteen percent actively avoid going to the furniture store at all if they can help it.
“The survey highlights how passionate Americans are about perfecting their home,” notes Aamir Baig, CEO of Article, in a statement. “It’s not surprising allocating finances and how much to spend on furniture are the leading causes of disagreements considering the massive markups in the traditional retail industry. It’s possible to obtain stylish, quality products at a fair price by shopping directly from online brands.”
There are some things you can do to agree on your design plan. The first thing is that you both have to be prepared to compromise. But that doesn’t mean giving up your ideas completely.
You can mix and match your ideas especially when it comes to furniture. Shopping together might be a bit frustrating and will probably take time to find items but it’s worth it.
Try having each of you make inspiration board with colors and pictures of designs you like. Then compare them and look for things that are similar. Or you can each have certain rooms to decorate.
Additionally you can always hire outside help. A design professional can come up with new solutions to the problem. They can also be a middle ground when you can’t seem to communicate with your partner.
